Duodenal Switch (DS) is a surgical procedure used for the treatment of obesity. This method involves both reducing stomach volume and rerouting the intestines.
In DS surgery, a surgical procedure is done to make the stomach a smaller bag. Next, the outlet of this bag is placed towards the end of the intestines. Also, part of the intestines is cut and combined with the other part, thus reducing the absorption of nutrients.
The DS procedure is a highly effective method in the treatment of obesity. With this method, about 70 to 80 percent of the person can lose weight. In addition, obesity-related health problems, especially diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea, can be controlled with DS.
DS surgery can be considered in cases where other weight loss methods cannot achieve results and for the control of obesity-related diseases. However, before any surgical procedure, the risks and benefits should be carefully evaluated and consulted with a physician. The DS procedure, like other bariatric surgery procedures, involves risks such as infection, bleeding, anesthesia problems, and intestinal problems. Some side effects may be associated with DS due to the rapid passage of nutrients through the intestines, including reflux, nutritional deficiencies, and vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
